The fun of a PC in your pocket. The mylo internet device lets you connect to Wi-Fi hot spots, talks, chat and surf the web. Eventhough without a Wi-Fi Sony, mylo internet device gives you what need to stay connected. It conveniently uses wireless LAN technology. Call your friends on Skype for free or IM them on AIM, Google talk, or Yahoo!Messenger using the back-lit-slide-out keyboard and enjoy unparalleled communication in the palm of your hands. You can also browse the Web, take photos and share them on the 3.5-inch LCD touch screen. All this on a device small enough to take virtually anywhere. Sony mylo is also available in white.

The device will use information from other devices to suggest routes that avoid traffic. This is illustrated in the image above where various routes are available. It is also integrated with Yahoo! Local Search so you can look up anything in their local index. One of the things that people most looking to is the ability to send things to the device. This will be possible via its web services. So things like a bookmarklet and email should work. The Dash Express will also provide access to geo-dependant services like gas prices and movie times. Other data services will be available in time.

For the first time, Giorgio Armani’s signature elegance and simplicity is applied to mobile phone design. A large 2.6-inch QVGA TFT LCD screen maximizes the user’s visual experience and optimizes the full touch-screen user interface (UI). Along with the outer appearance of the phone, the graphical user interface (GUI) and audio user interface (AUI) also reflect Giorgio Armani’s modern simplicity. By adapting a haptical UI, users can feel an immediate mild vibration when they touch icons on the display.
Despite its compactness, the phone is loaded with the latest powerful multi-media features. It is equipped with a 3-megapixel camera, a music player supporting various types of music formats and a full internet browser.
(IDG) — Wireless videophones and high-speed Internet access are a reality with the world’s first third-generation or “3G” mobile services, which were launched on October 1 by NTT DoCoMo in Tokyo.

Third-generation wireless: A group of wireless technologies that move from circuit-switched communications to wireless broadband, high-speed, packet-based networks. These are preceded by first-generation analog and second-generation digital, communication technologies.

What is 3G wireless?

So-called 3G wireless networks are capable of transferring data at speeds of up to 384Kbps. Average speeds for 3G networks will range between 64Kbps and 384Kbps, quite a jump when compared to common wireless data speeds in the United States that are often slower than a 14.4Kb modem. 3G is considered high-speed or broadband mobile Internet access, and in the future 3G networks are expected to reach speeds of more than 2Mbps.

The 3G technologies are turning phones and other devices into multimedia players, making it possible to download music and video clips. The new service is called the “freedom of mobile multimedia access” (FOMA), and it uses wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) technology to transfer data over its networks. W-CDMA sends data in a digital format over a range of frequencies, which makes the data move faster, but also uses more bandwidth than digital voice services. W-CDMA is not the only 3G technology; competing technologies include CDMAOne, which differs technically, but should provide similar services.

FOMA services are available within a 20-mile radius around the center of Tokyo, the company plans to introduce it to other Japanese cities by the end of the year. But services and phones are expensive and uptake of this market is expected to be slow.

What is 2.5G?

When the wireless industry realized that it was going to be costly and technologically challenging to upgrade to 3G networks, an interim stage emerged called 2.5G. These networks transfer data at speeds of up to 114Kbps, which is faster than traditional digital (2G) networks. They are always on. A phone with 2.5G services can alternate between using the Net, sending or receiving text messages, and making phone calls without losing its connection.

While Japan has had 2.5G services for more than a year and Europe also has had 2.5G services, the U.S. is just beginning to make these same services available. Seattle was the first U.S. city to acquire 2.5G services, in July. Wireless carriers are working on expanding those services to more cities in 2001. The dominant 2.5G technology is general packet radio service (GPRS), which is always on and gives users a connection to the Internet and e-mail.

Why is the U.S. so far behind the rest of the world?

The U.S. lags behind the rest of the world when it comes to wireless technologies for a number or reasons. The telecommunications infrastructure in the U.S. is more developed than many European and Asian countries. As a result, the demand for wireless devices has been lower in the U.S because consumers have other lower-cost options.

Also, the U.S. has a number of competing technical standards for digital services, while European and Asian countries are predominately centered on one group of standards in the global systems for mobile communication (GSM) family.

The 3G wireless services also require additional bandwidth (compared to 2G services), but many U.S. wireless companies don’t have licenses for enough airwaves to provide such services.

Communication has grown significantly over the past decades. The world was once unable to carry on conversation using voice telephones. Just as people once rode horses instead of driving vehicles, communications have improved drastically over the years.

The inceptions of the cellular telephone, wireless internet and other technologies have given people the ability to contact and communicate with others from virtually anywhere in the world and at any time.

A new foldable phone which much resembles a Swiss Army Knife provides a gaming device and multimedia player of the future for consumers. This product uses a high resolution screen that is flexible enough to fold in half when the device is closed and not being used.

The use of organic light emitting diode allows users to customize the phone’s look with images that are displayed or with gaming buttons or the keypad which is located on the inside of the phone. When this phone is closed it is approximately the size of a small post-it note.

Another benefit is that it opens from two different sides. One serves as the phone, email and IM servicing unit and the other acts as a game console, photo viewer and music and video player. To ensure safety that there is no one else using the phone, there is also a built in biometric optical scanner.

This is definitely a communication device of the future.

Since thieves typically prefer cellular phones and laptop computers, a group of scientific researchers at the VVT Technical Research Center in Finland is currently developing a product that will leave thieving criminals in the lurch.

The plan is to equip cellular phones and notebook computers with specialized sensors and software that has the ability to analyze and save the walking patterns of their owners. If the phone or computer determines that it is suddenly being carried by someone with a stride that is unfamiliar it will go into a lockdown mode until the correct password is entered.

Once this technology is introduced and users begin implementing it thieves will find taking these gadgets virtually pointless.

Another wonderful communication device of the future is being developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab. Researchers are developing a fully functional laptop that is designed to be sold for approximately $100 so that children in poor or underdeveloped nations will have the ability to access the internet.

The laptop will use a dual mode display that costs around $35, much like the ones found in inexpensive DVD players. The operating system will be small with only 1 GB of storage and the device will be able to be plugged into a typical wall outlet or charged by a crank driven battery. It will also connect to the internet using a wireless card.

These devices are definitely going to be a communication technology of the future and give people in lower developed countries the ability to communicate with others far away via the internet.

While some of the communication devices of the future are far from being released to consumers, it does give some idea of how the trends are heading.

Communication is a major topic in society. With the many steps that have been taken to bring the world the communication devices of today, it stands to reason that as more and more researchers and scientists work to develop newer devices, the technology of the future could be quite substantial.

The emergence of internet to human life has changed the way people live their life as it has affected human in many ways. For 7 million years, human communication has been limited to hollering distances. Only a few thousand years ago, short signals with flags, messengers or smoke and then that was only limited to kings and generals. Only a within a hundred years ago did radio and telephone emerge for voice and made available to most of the world. Now we can send linked and styled text, voice, pictures and video to anyone. Electronic mail and chat programs are already making a big impact on the way people communicate. E-mail is quickly replacing regular mail since it is faster, cheaper, and more convenient. Chat programs are beginning to replace the telephone since they are more convenient and allow a person to talk to multiple people at once. Even commercial interactions such as buying and selling goods or gathering information are facilitated by the internet. However, one drawback comes with these changes; the Internet allows communication to become less personal.

To gain information, one had to find a person who knew that information and ask them to explain it or attain it from a book without much personal interaction with others. The two way communication required face to face interaction. The telephone allowed two way communications to occur without such personal interaction. Even writing an e-mail tends to be less personal than writing a real letter as people tend to send them off without giving them the careful personal consideration they would give to a letter. In the past, people were forced to interact personally and often face to face with others to perform daily tasks. Hence, forcing them to acquire social skills. Today, the Internet has lessened the need for direct communication, which could diminish the human social skills required for a happy and successful life.

The Internet is breaking down the role of geographic separation as a physical barrier to communication and facilitating the formation of a global community. It allows people to make contacts or stay in communication over longer distances. Almost anyone can place a web page on the Internet for the entire world to view. As the Internet becomes global, these effects will increase. The Internet is revolutionizing the economy and the way companies do business. For instance, e-commerce is changing the way goods and services transactions and encouraging the development of a global community market.

Nowadays, people want access to Internet-based communication with health care providers. There is evidence that online communication with health care providers promotes health-related quality of life and, further, that health care consumers would benefit from increased partnerships between health information technology and health care provider, since health care providers are a more trusted source of health information than the Internet (but the Internet is the source most often used by the public to retrieve health information)

As with every single innovation, internet has its own advantages and disadvantages. But usually, greater magnitude of advantages outweighs its disadvantages. Today internet has brought a globe in a single room. Right from news across the corner of the world, wealth of knowledge to shopping, purchasing the tickets of your favorite movie-everything is at your finger tips. Internet has great potential and lot to offer, however, like every single innovation in science and technology, internet has its own advantages and disadvantages:-

Advantages:-

Communication
The foremost target of internet has always been the communication. And internet has excelled beyond the expectations .Still; innovations are going on to make it faster, more reliable. By the advent of computer’s Internet, our earth has reduced and has attained the form of a global village.

Now we can communicate in a fraction of second with a person who is sitting in the other part of the world. Today for better communication, we can avail the facilities of e-mail; we can chat for hours with our loved ones. There are plenty messenger services in offering. With help of such services, it has become very easy to establish a kind of global friendship where you can share your thoughts, can explore other cultures of different ethnicity.

Information
Information is probably the biggest advantage internet is offering. The Internet is a virtual treasure trove of information. Any kind of information on any topic under the sun is available on the Internet. The search engines like Google, yahoo is at your service on the Internet. You can almost find any type of data on almost any kind of subject that you are looking for. There is a huge amount of information available on the internet for just about every subject known to man, ranging from government law and services, trade fairs and conferences, market information, new ideas and technical support, the list is end less.

Students and children are among the top users who surf the Internet for research. Today, it is almost required that students should use the Internet for research for the purpose of gathering resources. Teachers have started giving assignments that require research on the Internet. Almost every coming day, researches on medical issues become much easier to locate. Numerous web sites available on the net are offering loads of information for people to research diseases and talk to doctors online at sites such as, America’s Doctor. During 1998 over 20 million people reported going online to retrieve health information.

Entertainment
Entertainment is another popular raison d’être why many people prefer to surf the Internet. In fact, media of internet has become quite successful in trapping multifaceted entertainment factor. Downloading games, visiting chat rooms or just surfing the Web are some of the uses people have discovered. There are numerous games that may be downloaded from the Internet for free. The industry of online gaming has tasted dramatic and phenomenal attention by game lovers. Chat rooms are popular because users can meet new and interesting people. In fact, the Internet has been successfully used by people to find life long partners. When people surf the Web, there are numerous things that can be found. Music, hobbies, news and more can be found and shared on the shared.

Services

Many services are now provided on the internet such as online banking, job seeking, purchasing tickets for your favorite movies, guidance services on array of topics engulfing the every aspect of life, and hotel reservations. Often these services are not available off-line and can cost you more.

E-Commerce
Ecommerce is the concept used for any type of commercial maneuvering, or business deals that involves the transfer of information across the globe via Internet. It has become a phenomenon associated with any kind of shopping, almost anything. You name it and Ecommerce with its giant tentacles engulfing every single product and service will make you available at your door steps. It has got a real amazing and wide range of products from household needs, technology to entertainment.

Disadvantages:-

Theft of Personal computer

If you use the Internet, you may be facing grave danger as your personal information such as name, address, credit card number etc. can be accessed by other culprits to make your problems worse.

Spamming

Spamming refers to sending unwanted e-mails in bulk, which provide no purpose and needlessly obstruct the entire system. Such illegal activities can be very frustrating for you, and so instead of just ignoring it, you should make an effort to try and stop these activities so that using the Internet can become that much safer.

Virus threat

Virus is nothing but a program which disrupts the normal functioning of your computer systems. Computers attached to internet are more prone to virus attacks and they can end up into crashing your whole hard disk, causing you considerable headache.

Pornography
This is perhaps the biggest threat related to your children’s healthy mental life. A very serious issue concerning the Internet. There are thousands of pornographic sites on the Internet that can be easily found and can be a detrimental factor to letting children use the Internet.

Though, internet can also create havoc, destruction and its misuse can be very fatal, the advantages of it outweigh its disadvantages.

What is internet???? The Internet, sometimes called simply “the Net,” is a worldwide system of computer networks – a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers).

today, the Internet is a public, cooperative, and self-sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Physically, the Internet uses a portion of the total resources of the currently existing public telecommunication networks. Technically, what distinguishes the Internet is its use of a set of protocols called TCP/IP (for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). Two recent adaptations of Internet technology, the intranet and the extranet, also make use of the TCP/IP protocol.

For many Internet users, electronic mail (e-mail) has practically replaced the Postal Service for short written transactions. Electronic mail is the most widely used application on the Net. You can also carry on live “conversations” with other computer users, using Internet Relay Chat (IRC). More recently, Internet telephony hardware and software allows real-time voice conversations. The most widely used part of the Internet is the World Wide Web (often abbreviated “WWW” or called “the Web”). Its outstanding feature is hypertext, a method of instant cross-referencing. In most Web sites, certain words or phrases appear in text of a different color than the rest; often this text is also underlined. When you select one of these words or phrases, you will be transferred to the site or page that is relevant to this word or phrase. Sometimes there are buttons, images, or portions of images that are “clickable.” If you move the pointer over a spot on a Web site and the pointer changes into a hand, this indicates that you can click and be transferred to another site.

Using the Web, you have access to millions of pages of information. Web browsing is done with a Web browser, the most popular of which are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. The appearance of a particular Web site may vary slightly depending on the browser you use. Also, later versions of a particular browser are able to render more “bells and whistles” such as animation, virtual reality, sound, and music files, than earlier versions on the Internet.

What is communication?

The term ‘communication’ covers just about any interaction with another person. It includes sharing information, ideas and feelings between people.

Communication on the internet…

Communication is the most popular use of the Internet, with email topping the list of all the technologies used. Some of the types of communication technologies used also include email discussion groups, Usenet news, chat groups, and IRC. These are unique to networked computer environments and have come into wide popularity because of the Internet. Other technologies, including video and audio conferencing and Internet telephony, are also available on the Internet. They require more multimedia capabilities of computer systems and are more taxing of network resources than the others. They also are adaptations of other technologies to the Internet.

Most of the technologies that are unique to the Internet require communication to be done in text—letters with some symbols and punctuation. Communicating effectively involves taking the time, except in informal communications, to use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation and writing an appropriate message. When replying to a message includes the pertinent parts of the message and uses an appropriate and interesting subject header in any case.

When you’re communicating on the Internet take special care not to give out personal information to strangers and to treat others with respect. Be aware of the risks involved in communicating with people you cannot see and may never meet in person. Take time to consider what you write to others, and be careful to avoid humor and sarcasm except with the best of friends. You can’t assume that your messages are private, so be careful about what you write.

Several issues related to ethical and legal considerations arise from using the Internet for communication. The manner in which communication is implemented on the Internet makes it susceptible to monitoring. You can’t assume that communications are private. Some believe that sending email is like sending a message on a postcard. Some laws have been enacted to help protect privacy during electronic communications. These, however, have been difficult to enforce and are rarely applied. One way to protect privacy is to encrypt or code a message. A common way of encrypting messages is through the use of public and private keys. Although software for encryption is readily available, current policies and laws prohibit its export.

Another area of concern is dealing with abusive or offensive communications. Laws that apply to libel, harassment, and abuse have been applied to cases where the offending behavior has occurred on the Internet. Unsolicited email or other forms of communication is called spam. It definitely is an annoyance, but also quite costly to the people who receive the junk email or other communications. It’s relatively inexpensive to produce, because most of the cost of transporting the email is shifted to the receiver and all people that use the networks supporting the Internet.

Introduction to the Network Communication Devices

In this tutorial you will learn get the basic introduction to network devices such as nic adapters, routers, hubs, switches, modems, communication cables, lan/wan routers, gateway and other devices. A network is consists of a larger number of the communication devices. The simplest device that is used in the communication is the NIC adapter which is attached with the every computer in a network. If you want to build a LAN, you will need to have computers, hubs, switches, network adapters, UTP/STP cables, routers, internal/external modems, connectors, cable testers and clipping tool.

On the other hand if you need to build WAN, you will need to have routers, switches, dedicated or leased telephone lines such as ISDN lines, frame relay connection and other types of wan communication connections.

There are different communication mediums such as Ethernet cables, copper wire, coaxial cable, fiber optic cables, leased telephone lines and ever air is also a communication medium for the satellite communication. The most common networking medium is the LAN is the Ethernet cable (UTP/STP), which is used in the star topology. Hub is a central device of a network and every computer in a network is directly connected with the hub.

If the hub fails to work, the communication between the computers stops till the hub again starts working. Hub broadcasts the data to its every port, and then finding the destined computer, the data sent toward it. The switch is an advance form of the hub similar in functions but the advanced switches has a switching table in them. A advanced switch stores the MAC address of every attached computer and the data is only sent to the destined computer, unlike the hubs where data is sent to all ports. A router is a key device in the internet communication and wan communication system. A router has software called routing table and the source and destination addresses are stored in the routing table.

A router connects two logically and physically different networks. Router finds the IP address of the next hop (next router) and the data is sent toward it and so on. The well known routers developing companies are Cisco systems, Nortel, DLink and others. Every ISP, banks, corporate offices and multinational companies use routers for LAN and WAN communications and communication in their private networks. A gateway can be device or software in a network.

A gateway device connects the LAN with the internet. A gateway is directly exposed to the internet so it should be securely configured and in and out traffic should be monitored. If you are using DSL connection, you must need a DSL modem in your network. The telephone line is connected with the DSL modem and UTP/STP cable attaches your computer with the DSL modem. Modems are the devices that are used to modulate and demodulate the data. They convert analogue signals to digital and digital signals to analogue so that signals can travel on the telephone lines.

There are certain types of the cables that are used to connect two or more computers in a network. Fiber optic cable acts as a backbone between the ISPs and corporate offices. Data travels at the speed of light on the fiber optic cables. The cost and the installation cost of the fiber optic cable is very high but it is becoming very popular in the home networking and LANs also. In the local area networking, 10baseT/CAT5 cable is most commonly in use.

A server is a computer in network that provides services to the client computers such as logon requests processing, files access and storage, internet access, printing access and many other types of services. Servers are mostly equipped with extra hardware such as plenty of external memory (RAM), more data store capacity (hard disks), high processing speed and other features.
